Autocross
Airport Autocross Course
Tom Roos knows he may loose time against the 747 in the straights but his C4S will get 'em in the corners!

General Information:

Autocrossers take on the challenge of running the gauntlet through a maze of orange pylons to see how well they can get through the course while knocking down as few cones as possible, preferably none! There are different classes so that the classic Porsche won't have to complete against the most modern Porsche technology. Autocross is an excellent way to learn the mechanics of ABC (acceleration, braking, cornering). Every well-maintained Porsche of any vintage is appropriate for an autocross. Yes, even Cayennes!

Hurricane Region Autocrosses emphasize the fun of turning your Porsche loose rather than winning the SCCA Solo II Championship. Experience is not necessary and there is a minimum of equipment you will need. We follow the Parade Competition classes for small regions and use Parade Competition rules for autocrossing as primary guidelines.

Our emphasis is threefold: safety, fun, cooperation.

If you sign up for an event, plan to stay for the day. Autocrosses require everyone participate. There are many jobs to do. Course set-up and clean-up, grid control, and most importantly cousre working - when you are not driving, you can help with safety and competition by being a course worker. With everyone doing their part the autocross runs smoothly and on-time. We can include even more seat time by bringing one or two non-drivers who can work the course for both heats. Less set-up time between run groups means more time on the course.

2008 Season

We have at least three autocrosses planned for this season: April 26, May 10, and June 7.  The details for each event will appear on our Club Calendar as well as in the "What's New" box on the home page.

Practice

During some events we have practice sessions and or training schools directed by experienced drivers. See the Club Calendar to check a date for practice sessions or training. We always try to leave time for timed fun runs at the end of the day.

Location

The course is located at the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport on US 74, south of Southern Pines and just outside Laurinburg.

  • Exit at Laurinburg-Maxton Airport sign.
  • Turn right off exit ramp onto Airport Road.
  • Turn right at first stop sign onto Skyway Church Road; after passing the industrial businesses, the air field will be on your left.
  • Take the first left onto Hickman Road after you see the airfield.
  • Travel up to the fork in the road on your right (Airbase Road).
